The Canadian Civil Liberties Association came out in response to the federal government invoking the Emergencies Act, formerly known as the War Measures Act, saying that the threshold necessary for invoking the act hasn't been met.
During Justin Trudeau's press conference where he made the announcement, he never cited which of the four reasons acceptable for implementing the Act he was using. This should be a huge red flag to those who are familiar with the Emergencies Act. The Twitter account that represents the organization tweeted a lengthy thread defending Canada's democracy and civil liberties while stating why they believe this is wrong, and also stating that "governments regularly deal with difficult situations, and do so using the powers granted to them by democratically elected representatives".
"The Emergencies Act can only be invoked when a situation 'seriously threatens the ability of the government of Canada to preserve the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of Canada' and when 'the situation cannot be effectively dealt with under any other law of Canada'." tweeted the account. "Emergency legislation should not be normalized."
I have recently started a petition on change.org calling on the United States, NATO, and/or the United Nations to impose sanctions on Canada for human rights abuses within regards to everything going on. I am aware that most of these organizations may actually support the actions of the Canadian government, but a petition with 100,000 signatures of freedom supporters worldwide could make alot of noise internationally, and may cause some international news companies to report on the heinous acts that the federal government is currently committing.
